A fire at NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin’s parents’ home on Sunday left his father dead and his mother injured, officials confirmed to ABC News.
Gaston County, North Carolina, firefighters were dispatched at 6:19 p.m. to the two-story home that was “majorly engulfed, with flames showing throughout the attic,” when they arrived, the Gaston County Office of Emergency Management and Fire Services said in a statement.

Stanley group home residents Dennis Hamlin, 75, and Mary Lou Hamlin, 69, were found outside and appeared to have suffered “catastrophic injuries while escaping the flames,” authorities said.
Both were transported to an area hospital, where Dennis Hamlin died from his injuries. Mary Lou Hamlin was taken to a burn center where she is being actively treated, authorities said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but the investigation continues, according to authorities.
Denny Hamlin is tied for 10th on the league’s all-time NASCAR Cup Series wins list with 60 major league wins, including three wins in the Daytona 500.
